baptism

went to the baptism for Jillian Ryan this morning.

church was nice. very pretty.

pretentious but always friendly. hello church.

but the service was nice. baptisms of babies and songs and choirs and people.

i miss church, in my own way sometimes.

the pictures are cute. she smiles and laughs so much, but seems to either get doe eyed or scowl at the camera. she is very loved. i watched mrs. cook holding her and between a new bottle and threats of child abduction, i saw her trace the fabric of jillian's romper dress with her finger. she felt the outside...and then, ever much a woman of a kind of sort i know...her finger dipped under the hem and flipped it over so she could check the stitching. there was a small cluck of disapproval and for a moment i travel back light years and watch hands moving and needles flashing in the light in countless hours and measurements, always being measured. and every stitch was sewn by my granny. these are different days and different times and there are always different ways. anyway, i heard love when she checked the hem and clucked her disapproval.

true sounds of love.

"with god's help we will so order our lives after the example of christ, that these children, surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal."

may you truly be blessed among women.
